The Ambassador

Mohamed Faisal was appointed as Maldives Ambassador to China on 26 October 2014 by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.  This is his first Ambassadorial appointment. Before being appointed  as Ambassador, he served a short period as Additional Secretary at the Foreign Ministry.

Ambassador Faisal has an excellent mix of administrative and policy experience having served the Government and the UN in Maldives. Faisal, joined the Government in 1992 and spent his early service career in the President’s Office. He was Assistant Director in the Policy Section from 2003 – 2006 and was appointed Director General in 2006 and transferred to the Cabinet Secretariat. He left the President’s Office in 2008 to further his education and later joined the Maldives office of the United Nations as the Head of the Resident Coordinator’s Office in 2012. He completed a 2 year assignment with the UN RCO Maldives in 2014.

Ambassador Faisal has a strong academic grounding in social sciences, specialising in development studies and demography. He was educated at the Australian National University (Canberra, Australia), Waikato University (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Victoria University of Wellington (Wellington, New Zealand).

He also takes a keen interest in sports and arts and is the former General Secretary and Vice President of the Cricket Board of Maldives.

Ambassador Faisal is married with 2 sons.
