Since 2001 Government of China has been offering scholarships to the Government of Maldives. Due to the reform and opening-up policy established by the Government of China and it is attracting more and more international students who are keen to experience the immense variety of educational areas and modern facilities offered by Chinese Universities/Institutes. Currently, Chinese Government sponsors diplomats and other officials of governments from various parts of the world to study basic Chinese and introduce them to the Chinese culture. Apart from that Government of China sponsors long term scholarships for those who are interested in majoring in Chinese language, military training, accounting, etc. Among short term programmes, familiarization programmes for senior officials of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs from various countries including Maldives are also sponsored by the Chinese Government.

Application

Applicants should apply to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Colombo between January and April every year.

Eligibility

Applicants must be in good health.
Applicants for general scholars must have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate studies and must be under the age of 45.
Applicants for senior scholars must have master or higher degree or hold academic title of associate professor or higher and must be under the age of 50.

Maldivian Government is in the process of signing an Agreement on Educational Cooperation under which the number of scholarships offered to the Maldives will be increased.

Together with scholarship opportunities offered mainly to the developing countries, Chinese Government has also opened its educational doorways to the international community who wish to study in China on self-finance.

Though there are number of areas where Maldivians can utilize the facilities provided by Chinese Universities / Institutes, it is only the field of medicine which has become most popular among Maldivians. This is reflected by the number of Maldivian students joining Dalian Medical University (DMU) in China under self-financing. Currently, there are more than 45 self-financed Maldivian students studying medicine in DMU.
